Homeowners should think about whether they need to install an intruder alarm system in their out buildings, Dorset Police have said.
The advice came as the force urged local residents to step up their home security measures following a series of burglaries in Bournemouth and Poole.
Members of the public are likely to be well aware of the importance of installing an alarm system for their home, but many garages and sheds have little protection against the threat posed by criminals.
Despite that, homeowners still use out buildings to store expensive goods, such as bikes and tools.
An intruder alarm system and a good quality padlock can both help to prevent burglars obtaining entry to garages and sheds, the force said.
The recommendation comes after the Home Office launched a campaign to educate the public about the importance of taking proper security measures, such as installing an alarm system and fitting good locks to doors and windows.

CCTV security cameras are said to have offered a number of benefits to one London borough in the past few weeks.
Wandsworth Council has highlighted the positive impact that the devices have had in putting an end to things like street brawling, while allowing local authorities in the region to respond to the needs of certain injured people.
It has also outlined the case of man who needed rescuing from the River Thames after falling in, who was helped out of the water after being noticed by a CCTV operative.
The council has additionally noted the importance of CCTV cameras in helping the authorities to deal with instances of criminal activity, with their footage often being used by the police force in local court cases.

As a rule the more expensive a property appears the higher the security level needs to be. As a house’s desirability increases, so does the temptation for the burglar and the risk they are willing to take. In response the security should follow accordingly, always maintaining a level where the burglar thinks it’s not worth the risk.
Just as telltale signs of riches attract burglars to a property, telltale signs of good security repel them. Thus at the same time as the householder is at pains not to show off their assets, they should be flashing their security for everybody to see.
Half the value of security is its power as a deterrent. This is why someone might put up an empty burglar alarm box, or hang ‘beware of the dog’ sign, despite only having a Golden Retriever puppy. When investing in security it is therefore important to make sure the window locks, the lights, the burglar alarm bell box, all make their presence known. Householders that are part of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme should advertise the fact with stickers placed in the windows facing the road.
Even if the idea of security is to firstly deter a break-in attempt, there is no excuse for not backing it up with a solid defence. Besides, empty burglar alarms are easily recognised by burglars, and a telltale sign of lax security.

An increase in the standards of home security has also had an effect in the burglary rate fall. Houses still contain desirable items for the thief but the skill and risk now required to get at them is often not worth the trouble. A thief would be much better off mugging somebody in the street for his or her iPod or mobile phone. This might help explain that while burglaries have fallen, muggings have been on the steady increase during the last decade.
The houses with decent security might be being targeted less by thieves, but the opportunist burglar is still on the look out for those that aren’t sufficiently protected. Even today, houses with simple security measures such as locks on windows and deadlocks on doors are ten times less likely to be burgled than those without any.

Each security alarm system Barking Dog installs is built to suit the individual client’s needs. All new security systems are guaranteed for 12 months and are issued with a National Security Inspectorate Certificate on completion. This Certificate can often be used to gain a discount on your annual contents insurance premium
Many companies sell security alarm systems at a reduced price only to claw back their losses by locking you into a three year contract at an exorbitant price, their fees having to be paid monthly. Barking Dog doesn’t believe in this, we charge you for the installation and the equipment and from day one the system is owned by you.
A Monitored or Unmonitored Security Alarm System?
Many companies will only sell monitored systems (because the charges are greater and hence there is a higher profit margin). Barking Dog, however, installs both and gives you the choice.
We can offer every form of monitoring service available for your security system. These range from cost effective SMS monitoring which alerts you of an alarm activation via a text message sent to your mobile telephone, right through to RedCARE dual path monitoring, the latter offering Police response to confirmed alarm activations.
